Take Action on Texas Tobacco-Free Kids Day - April 2, 2008! Texas Tobacco-Free Kids Day (TTFKD) is an annual awareness day in Texas to encourage students of all ages to live tobacco-free lifestyles. Sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Center for Safe Communities and Schools (CSCS), the goal of this year’s event on April 2, 2008, is to get every school in Texas involved in the effort to help children make healthy choices by not using tobacco. TTFKD is held in conjunction with Kick Butts Day, a national event sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. The day is an annual celebration of youth leadership and activism in tobacco prevention efforts. On Kick Butts Day, thousands of youth will organize activities to expose and counter the tobacco industry’s powerful promotional strategies aimed at youth. Some of the past activities include youth-led rallies in state capitals, surveys of tobacco advertising in local stores and street activism events. Getting your school involved in TTFKD is easy. Simply review the TTFKD 2008 Activity Guide, make arrangements for your school to participate, and send us a brief report on what you did. Your school can do something as simple as broadcasting tobacco-free messages on announcements or as elaborate as organizing students for a major educational activity. As an incentive, DSHS and CSCS are offering scholarships and travel stipends to the 2008 Texas Teen Tobacco Summit for the first 20 schools or groups submitting event reports! The conference is a great opportunity to help some of your students become leaders in tobacco prevention. You can learn more about the conference at http://cscs.txstate.edu/cyi/cyi-tobacco-conf.htm. See the Scholarship Details and Rules to find out more. |
