School Safety Exemplary Award presented to:
Katy Independent School District

The School Safety Advocacy Council of Lawrence, Massachusetts recognized Katy ISD at the 2009 National School Safety Conference held in Orlando, Florida on July 27-31, 2009. This award was earned in recognition of the districts efforts in developing a holistic emergency plan that included special needs. A cornerstone of this program was the development of individualized Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEP). This significantly increases the capability to appropriately evacuating or sheltering students with special needs in the event of an emergency. This plan may be the first of its kind in the K-12 system in the United States. Also contributing to Katy ISD, was the Cinco Ranch High School Crisis Response Team (CRHS CRT), which serves as an extension of the Katy Independent School District Special Needs Emergency Planning Team. They assembled a team of 28 campus employees, each of which was a full contributing member. They completed this project during the months of March, April, and May of 2009. They developed campus safety guidelines in Chinese, French, Spanish, Japanese, and German for students and parents of limited English proficiency.

The award was received by Mr. Thomas J. Gunnell on behalf of Katy ISD.
Congratulations Katy ISD!
